Item Details

Banana stems are from the Musa acuminate tree, and they are very durable.  Banana stems last several months in an aquarium and terrarium.  They product biofilm which is enjoyed by shrimp and fry and isopods too.

Product Details

  • Scientific Name: Musa acuminate
  • Common Names: Dried banana stems
  • Source Location: India
  • Size: Approximately 6 inches to 12 inches long
  • 100% Natural: Organically sourced and naturally dried, free from artificial chemicals — safe and sustainable for all applications

Uses

  • Aquarium: When properly prepared, banana stems promote a biofilm grazing spot that shrimp and invertebrates love.  They release a low to moderate amount of tannins and they are durable and long lasting.
  • Bioactive Terrarium: Provides hiding spots and a food source for isopods and springtails, enriches the substrate as they break down, and encourages foraging and exploration.  Their unique shape also serves as whimsical decor.
  • Botanical Home Decor: Perfect as bowl fillers or integrated into natural arrangements, terrariums, and potpourri.
  • Craft & Art Projects: Their unique shape inspires creative possibilities in wreaths and mixed media art.

Aquarium Preparation

  1. Boil: Boil for at least 15 minutes to help them sink and leach initial tannins.
  2. Soak: Soak in clean water overnight or longer, changing water daily, until fully waterlogged and desired tannin level is reached.
  3. Ready to Use: Once they sink and you've achieved your desired water coloration, add to your tank.

Please Note: As a natural product, each stem will vary in size, shape, and color. Intended for decorative, craft, and aquarium/vivarium use only. Not for human consumption.
