The Galaxy Pleco, also known as the Vampire Pleco or Tooth-Nose Pleco, is a striking freshwater catfish from South America characterized by a dark, black body covered in bright white or yellow spots, resembling a starry night sky. It can grow to about 9-10 inches (23-25 cm) and is known for its territorial nature, particularly towards other plecos. The fish requires a stable freshwater environment with hiding places like rocks and driftwood, and a diet rich in protein. 
Key Characteristics

  • Appearance: A dark body (black to dark brown) with bright white or yellowish spots.
  • Common Names: Galaxy Pleco, Vampire Pleco, Tooth-Nose Pleco, or Tusken Pleco. 
  • Scientific Name: Leporacanthicus galaxias.

Behavior & Temperament

  • Territorial: Like many armored catfish, they are territorial and can become aggressive towards conspecifics (similar fish), especially when it comes to establishing territory, though they are generally peaceful with different species. 
  • Bottom Dweller: They spend most of their time on the aquarium floor, scavenging for food.
Aquarium Environment

  • Tank Size: A minimum tank of 50 gallons is recommended to house this fish.
  • Habitat: A planted aquarium with rocks, driftwood, and dense vegetation provides a healthy environment and hiding spaces to reduce stress.

Diet

  • Carnivorous: The Galaxy Pleco is a carnivorous fish and needs a high-protein diet. 
  • Food: A varied diet of sinking carnivore pellets, freeze-dried bloodworms, and tubifex is recommended.
